ABSTRACT

On the evening of September 18, 1714, George I, Elector of Hanover, great-grandson of James I, and King of England by act of Parliament, landed with his mistress and his son, the future George II, at Greenwich, The next day some 200 coaches of the gentry and nobility escorted the two Georges to the city, where they were greeted by the Lord Mayor and the cheers of thousands. The carriages and the cheers expressed relief that England had escaped a civil war and a Catholic king far more than it did any great love of the two Georges.
