ABSTRACT

You now have the basic information you need to plan and execute a complete research project. In Figure 5.6 in Chapter 5 we provided an overview of the research process. We have explored the components of that process at length in the remainder of the text. In this closing chapter, we review the research process as an integrated whole. We stress the ways in which the steps you have seen separated by chapter boundaries are, in practice, interwoven and interdependent. Our purpose is to facilitate your attacking research questions with a full understanding of the research process rather than a disjointed focus on each stage as it is reached. The value of an integrated understanding, of course, is that many research problems can be avoided if the researcher is aware of the implications of decisions made at one stage of a project for subsequent stages.
