The last line, particularly the syntactic function and meaning of pares, has been a stumbling-stone ever since antiquity.2 Widely different modern prose renderings may be regarded as a symptom of a problem not yet convincingly resolved.3 In a prose text one would have been tempted to consider pares an intruder muddling4 the easy apposition et cantare et respondere parati.
