ABSTRACT

From renderings given by commentators one can often perceive not only their difficulties in understanding the transmitted wording, but also diagnose that their efforts will remain futile. Horsfall has chosen this rendering as his solution: "That young man . . . occupies [tenet] the next position [proxima loca] by the lots that assign the light [sorte lucis]".1 On Heinsius' suggestion luci he says: "The correction to luci . . . is only too easy, though entirely unsupported".2
