ABSTRACT

I have dealt with Anchises' words to the Roman people (6. 851-3) on several occasions during the course of recent decades. I have changed my opinion on one important point. At 852 I no longer think that Vergil wrote morem. I believe that the correct reading mores was preserved in Africa.2 For editors I have little that is new to add here (except for the impression of stubbornness). I still think that the arguments in favour of the dative paci, the reading offered by the capital letter manuscripts, are unconvincing. The full argument is offered by my 2011 Gymnasium article (see n. 1, p. 278, this volume).
