ABSTRACT

This is the text according to the textual evidence unanimously accepted by editors reaching from Mynors (1969) – via Williams (1973), Geymonat (1973/2008), Fordyce (1977), Perret (1978), Paratore (1981), Horsfall (2000), Goold (2000), Binder (2001) – down to Conte (2009), to mention only editors of the last generation. But should this text be still seen as viable and defensible? Anyway, this final remark of Latinus before the outbreak of war is in reality one of the great challenges for interpreters of Vergil and has been so for centuries.
