PRELIMINARIES TounderstandthetheoryofArabmetricsworkedoutbyal-Xalil, itisnecessarytohavesomegeneralnotionsaboutArabpoetry andmetrics.Theclassicalverse(bayt)iscomposedoftwo hemistichs(mi~ra'orsatr).Thehemistichiscomposedoftwoto fourfeet(tafllorjuz').Thefootiscomposedofsyllableswhich areeithershort(u),orlong(-).Thelastsyllableofthehemistich isalwayslong.Ashortsyllableiscomposedofaconsonantanda shortvowel.Allothersyllablesarelong.Whatisknownasa superheavy(CVVCorCVGC),whichappearsinwordssuchas qarratun,isnotauthorizedinpoetry,exceptincertainrhymes.
