ABSTRACT
Working with a three-elements model of practice, this chapter examines the role of meaning in translation and related practices. It focuses on how general understandings of translation configure translation practices, as well as how the practice is governed by other normative elements, including explicit rule-like formulations, motivations and affective factors. It concludes with some consideration of how the practice of translating retains or loses participants.
