ABSTRACT
This chapter examines the methodological implications of studying translation practices and related practices empirically, with a brief consideration of researching past practices but a particular focus on conducting present-day research in workplaces. We explore the suitability for practice research of methods that are usually deployed in ethnography, namely participant observation and ethnographic interviewing. The practicalities and challenges of these and related methods are addressed. The chapter concludes by proposing a research agenda for translation studies that puts practices at its core, suggesting directions for future studies that may be particularly useful for those beginning doctoral studies or other practice-oriented research projects.
