ABSTRACT

Directional lighting, either natural or created, can create or enhance a travel image through the use of dramatic shadows which give depth to elements within a frame. The goal with using artificial lighting on location is to match the lighting to the mood to get the most out of the subject, whether it is by softening shadows or creating harder ones in a realistic way. This chapter discusses the use of the more powerful strobe units powered by either a large rechargeable battery or plugged into a separate external power pack. Unlike studio photography, with a large assortment of lighting and grip equipment at the ready, travel photography tends to put the photographer in a run-and-gun mode where they have to get a carefully selected and packed portable lighting set up into position quickly to get the shot under ever changing conditions.
