ABSTRACT

This chapter shows that the system of reproducing the masculinized nature of sport and its ancillary occupations and organizations is much more than just culturally hegemonic; it is also structural. It describes men's rule over women as patriarchy, and used Pierre Bourdieu, social theorist, to theorize how men have continued to dominate women in most of the important institutions in our culture. Dominance, of course, comes in many forms. The chapter highlights the pervasiveness of the cover-up of sexual assault against women by institutions that are heavily invested in their products. It examines how team-sport athletes seem to be at least partially responsible for the promotion of violence against women. When examining violence of men against women, it is theorized that the anti-feminine, sexist, and misogynistic attitudes that are socialized into male athletes might spill over into actual violence against women.
