ABSTRACT

This chapter is the second of four largely parallel chapters which discuss the growth experience of the selected economies in this book. This chapter will entail an assessment of Hong Kong’s development according to the analytical framework laid down in Chapter 2. It will first compare and contrast the city’s state of economy before and after its handover in 1997. Subsequently, the role played by legal, political, cultural factors and market infrastructure underlying its success will be discussed. The chapter will also consider, for example, whether the uncertainty in the political situation in Hong Kong, such as the Umbrella Revolution in 2015, will adversely affect the future of the city.
