ABSTRACT

This chapter is the third of four largely parallel chapters which discuss the growth experience of the selected economies in this book. This chapter will entail an assessment of Singapore’s development according to the analytical framework laid down in Chapter 2. It will first compare and contrast the city state’s economy before and after its independence in 1965. Subsequently, the role played by legal, political, cultural factors and market infrastructure underlying its success will be discussed. The chapter will also consider whether the city can continue its success in the post-Lee Kuan Yew era.
