ABSTRACT
Why do those of us who are interested in perception and illusion ignore the dramatic phenomena of conjuring? Conjuring is rarely if ever mentioned either in general books on psychology or in specialized books on perception, and it is not even cited in the Bible of perception, Hermann von Helmholtz’s great Treatise of Physiological Optics (1856-66), although it is hard to think of anything significant that Helmholtz missed.
