ABSTRACT

I find it odd that some extremely simple and very familiar situations puzzle us embarrassingly. Why are they confusing? Often the difficulty is to see what kind of puzzle, or problem, or question is presented. When this is unclear, we are apt to wriggle multidimensionally between: ‘Well, yes, of course – but this is rather too trivial to bother about – isn’t it?’ to: ‘Ah yes – too deep for our present understanding.’ It may be noted that these are stock philosophical responses to questions that we do not see how to resolve by experiment.
