ABSTRACT

Much as technologies slowly developed from crafts, so attempts to understand and control mind grew from the ‘folk psychology’ by which we assess and explain behaviour in everyday living. Folk psychology explanations are very different from explanations of physics and technology – for they incorporate intentions, and pleasures and pains, which are not supposed to belong to the mindless, inanimate world. Only people can tell lies or seek truth, though the first is difficult to detect and the second, as we all know, is exceedingly hard to attain.
