ABSTRACT
It seems oddly paradoxical that we need random events and samples which are unpredictable to discover what is lawful and so predictable. Why should the essential unpredictability of randomness be important for discovering lawful behaviour, which allows us to predict and control? For example, to show that smoking is bad for the health, there must be samples of many kinds of non-smokers for comparison with smokers.
