ABSTRACT

In the decade and a half since this book was first written, Star Trek – somewhat surprisingly for a science fiction franchise – has spent far less time looking forward than it has looking back. After the conclusion of the Voyager series in 2001, only the feature film Nemesis (and a brief flashback in the 2009 reboot movie) actually moved the story onward chronologically. Both the fifth Star Trek series Enterprise and the movies set in the cinematic ‘JJ-verse’ are technically prequels to The Original Series – they both take place earlier, in the Star Trek chronology, than Captain Kirk’s original five-year mission. 1 The reboot movies, in particular, derive much of their popular appeal from nostalgia, a hallmark of J.J. Abrams’ career as a director. 2
