ABSTRACT

Notwithstanding, or even, perhaps, because of, Hitler's criminality he became the function by which a listless, apathetic, beaten people were galvanized into the most formidable military power in Europe. We have merely to state this astonishing fact to realize that no unaided individual could deliberately have conceived, or carried out, so heroic a plan. The historian of the future who has to account for this achievement may well grope for hidden grains of gold in Hitler's character.
