ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the concepts discussed in this book. The book provides the information, ideas and guidance which enable teachers of languages to plan and deliver lessons that meet the individual needs of learners who experience difficulties. It will be especially valuable to subject teachers because the ideas and guidance are provided within a subject context, ensuring relevance and practicability. Teachers who cater well for pupils with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) are likely to cater for all pupils—demonstrating outstanding practice in their everyday teaching. Our education system is constantly changing. The national curriculum, SEND legislation, examination reform and significant change to Ofsted inspection means that teachers need to keep up to date and be able to develop the knowledge, skills and understanding necessary to meet the needs of all the learners they teach. The book helps practitioners to develop strategies that can be used selectively to enable each and every learner to make progress.
