ABSTRACT

149Most children show considerable moral development as they grow up. Of particular importance, they achieve an increasingly clear understanding of appropriate and inappropriate ways of behaving and interacting with other people. In addition, their behaviour becomes increasingly influenced by moral values, and they experience guilt and shame when they fail to live up to reasonable moral standards.

What factors lead children to exhibit moral development during the course of their childhood? Does it depend mostly on their parents, on learning from other children, or on genetic factors? Do children behave in a moral way because they are imitating others’ behaviour?
