ABSTRACT

163Most people are fascinated by the psychological differences between males and females. Are all the differences commonly assumed to exist between the sexes in their behaviour, abilities, and attitudes genuine, or do many of them simply reflect stereotypical views?

Why do most boys and girls prefer the company of other children of the same sex? Why do boys and girls differ so much in their preferred toys? Are these differences between boys and girls due more to heredity (nature) or environment (nurture)? Answers to these questions (and several others) are provided in this chapter.
