179Most infants develop a close attachment to their mother, and this plays a major role in their emotional development. Why does this happen? Do you think this attachment happens naturally or does it depend on the nature of the interactions between mother and infant? The attachments a child forms with its parents can be disrupted by events such as child care and divorce. What factors do you think might determine whether children cope successfully with such events?
