ABSTRACT

QUESTIONS, TOPICS AND RELATIVE CLAUSES

We have shown in the previous chapter that Welsh has two distinct relativisation strategies, only one of which can be analysed as involving gap - binding. The distribution of these strategies is c1aimed to follow from the CECP and the very restrictive definition of local operative in the grammar of Welsh. In turn, this strong locality requirement is linked to the Maximal Feature Matching Requirement. The effect of this requirement is to make available aseries of local binders (in an extended sense) for empty elements. These local binders satisfy the coindexation requirement.
