ABSTRACT

The aim of this chapter is to provide the reader with an introduction to the historical narrative of the American Dream and, more specifically, how it has embraced sport as a popular vehicle for its affirmation. The chapter will introduce the respective concepts of ‘American Exceptionalism’ and ‘Sports Space’ and challenge the received wisdom that America is different, exceptional or unique in terms of how it represents itself. The foundations for soccer to conceptually enter the psyche of the American people are considered by the author within an evolving and dynamic cultural and sporting landscape. The chapter acts as a key foundation in helping to contextualise contemporary reinterpretations and perceptions of what the American Dream means to its citizens.
