ABSTRACT

The present chapter strives to illuminate the involvement of the image of a psychologist in re-organizing the structure of the self. The main argument in this chapter holds that psychology students draw on the social-institutional and personal representations in their professional identity construction. The chapter introduces also the concept of personal transfer strategies that are developed by the persons to regulate the discrepancy between the “present self” and “future self.” The personal transfer strategies enable the feeling of “becoming different,” thus, regulating the self-understanding. In general, the chapter highlights the relations between the personal meaning complexes of a psychologist and the construction of professional self-understanding in becoming a psychologist.
