ABSTRACT

In Musica Universalis, the scope of music in life is presented, and that music is: universal, diverse, technological, personal, vital, fundamental, natural, mathematical, and evolving. Complexity theory is used to help understand the nature of musical evolution and the proliferation of genres. Discussion of classic equipment interacting with musicians and producers is exemplified in the story of the TR-808 and the legendary track Planet Rock. Chapter 1 then moves into a brief history of electronic music, and the two primary sound sources found therein: sound reproduction and sound synthesis. Independent label pioneers are the final topic before wrapping up with a section suggesting that music is cybernetic.
