ABSTRACT

In Selecting Your Tools, the discussion picks up from Chapter 7 by discussing the relationship between creativity and the tools we use to produce music. The essential differences between analog and digital, and hardware and software, are given as a lead-in to detailed discussion on the basic categories of equipment and tools used in modern music production. The DAW is given its own section, followed by a critical assessment of subjective terms and hype words used to describe and market audio products. Considerations for personal needs in home and project studios follow. The chapter concludes with issues around pirated software in our industry, and makes suggestions for legally obtaining cheap and free software.
