Wehaveseeninchapter6howthegrammaticalstructureofasentenceneedstobedescribedintermsofboththedomainofthe constructionsinvolvedinitandtherelationsbetweentheconstituentsofthoseconstructions.Wenowcometothequestionof whatkindsofelementthoseconstituentsare,or,moreaccurately, whatCLASSESofelementtheyare.Inanykindofsyntacticdescriptionwehavetoprovidelabelsforthedifferentkindsofelementlike PREDICATE,VERB,TRANSITIVE,etc.Buthowarethesearrivedat? Whatdoestheconceptof"grammaticalclass"or"label"involve? Howareclassesidentified?Thesequestionsneedtobeanswered, whatevermodelofgrammaticaldescriptionweareworkingwith. Thismeansexploringtheparadigmaticaxisofgrammar.
