ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the third C in CARE—content. Shulman differentiated between content knowledge and pedagogical content knowledge (PCK)—the methods of inquiry and teaching that are associated with a certain discipline. The idea of content knowledge and PCK are challenges for elementary educators who teach across subjects throughout the day in ways that secondary educators may not experience. It is very clear, in the social studies as well as in other areas, that content and pedagogical content knowledge are very closely related. In coaching social studies teaching, many of the same issues that come up in teaching will arise in coaching. The first is the content knowledge of the preservice teacher; the second is the choice of materials and practices within the social studies curriculum; and the third is the particular tools and strategies that teachers might draw on to deepen and extend students' thinking.
