ABSTRACT

This chapter overviews the role of video in Coaching with CARE as well as how video can help you to develop your understandings as a teacher of teachers within a community of coaches. It helps the readers to learn about a third approach to using video, which is called a reflective practice-based use. Goodman explains that retrospective miscue analysis (RMA) gives readers opportunities to observe and evaluate their responses to written texts. RMA provides evaluative evidence for the teacher about the ways readers respond to their own miscues and the texts they read, and shows the degree to which a conscious awareness of miscues influences reading development. The focus in the RMA sessions is on raising the reader's awareness of strategies they are using in constructing meaning through the text through shared focus on a literacy event. The goal of Retrospective Coaching Analysis (RCA) is to practice the act of reflection with a more knowledgeable other.
