ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses semi-structured interviews with several artist managers and self-managed artists across three sectors of the creative and cultural industries: music, dance and film. The research project primarily concerned the core creative arts and, through a consideration of artist management strategies, the relationship between this core and the outer circles of this model. The chapter describes three industries because they involve two of the different circles that constitute Throsby's seminal concentric circles model of the creative and cultural industries. The creative and cultural industries have most often been theorised and studied within media, communication and cultural studies, and this project also used this lens. A particular focus within this field is the body of literature relating to creative labour. In terms of the creative and cultural industries overall, Henry found that 'the same gender-related barriers that exist within other industry sectors are just as prevalent, if not more so, within the creative sector'.
