ABSTRACT

Further, some important and fascinating phenomena are described, such as inattentional and change blindness, which raise the interesting question of the relationship between attention and consciousness. The so-called neural “binding problem” is also introduced with some discussion of the

“unity of consciousness.” Making sure that we are clear about what is meant by the unity of consciousness and explaining how the brain achieves such unity has become a central topic in the study of consciousness. This chapter will close with sections on a few alternative theories of consciousness, including information integration theory (IIT), quantum theories of consciousness, and the enactive or sensorimotor theory.
