ABSTRACT

When geography teachers first design a series of lessons or scheme of work, one of the best approaches is to begin with the end in mind. The content and skills geography teachers develop may be linked to a specific qualification, specification or to a national curriculum, thus this will often dictate exactly what they need to teach their students. The reality is that those aims will not just happen by luck; they need to be worked at and planned for. The skills they are trying to develop are not just useful for the geography classroom but should be the necessary skills for 21st century learners to excel at university, the work place and in general life. The chapter provides the necessary skills students need to possess in order to become competent geographers, and these can be developed through their years at the school. It shows the topics that have been selected after discussions with both staff and students.
