ABSTRACT

Chapter 6 covers unhealthy eating as a risk factor for chronic diseases. Some of our most debilitating diseases can be traced to the way we eat and our relationship with food. While better planning of the built environment might not seem the obvious way to encourage healthier eating, the places where we live and work determine the types and prices of the food around us. And in today’s society of rush and busyness, we are even more likely to source the food we eat from our immediate environment. This chapter reviews these issues and concludes with an examination of the ways urban planning in Australia supports local food production. This includes protecting peri-urban agricultural lands from development and encouraging people to grow their own food in community gardens, on verges and in their own homes.
