ABSTRACT

This chapter explains about the welcoming prayer, which can help one to extend their centering prayer practice to daily life. Similar to exposure therapy within clinical psychology, the welcoming prayer can assist one in relating differently to their thoughts and feelings, cultivating a compassionate and accepting attitude in the process. To be open to God's loving presence, even in the midst of pain, means Christians can move in the direction of living the life they want. This reality is in contrast to getting repeatedly sidetracked by worrying thoughts and anxious feelings that might never fully go away. One of the most vivid reminders of God being 'with us' in times of stress occurs when individuals have encounters with heavenly beings. The most important part of the welcoming prayer is its emphasis on turning towards one's inner pain, rather than trying to avoid it, coupled with the ability to invite God into the process.
