ABSTRACT
Chapter 1 provides an overview of the contemporary governance context and the social, economic, and environmental crises that comprise the overall crisis of sustainability both governments and governance networks have failed to prevent or significantly mitigate. The authors explain how the interconnected nature of these complex problems cannot be resolved by government alone, and have therefore given rise to the concept of governance.
