ABSTRACT

The Dalit movements arose in the early years of the 20th century independently in various parts of the country. Dr Bhimrao Ramji alias Babasaheb Ambedkar truly reflected the resonance of historical developments that befell the Dalits. As a part of his efforts to get safeguards for the Dalits incorporated into the constitution, Ambedkar had undertaken to write a memorandum to be submitted to the constituent assembly. The major mass struggle Ambedkar led was at Mahad, a prominent town in Konkan some 170 km from Mumbai. Ambedkar had fully realised the futility of expecting reforms from the Hindus and began focusing on political solution. The Poona Pact totally disillusioned Ambedkar about reforms within the Hindu society and pushed him to be his radical best. At the tender age of six, the child Ambedkar had a brush with caste discrimination.
