ABSTRACT

As I read the review, I was reminded of C. P. Snow writing twenty-five years ago about the two cultures, the sciences and the humanities: "Thirty years ago the cultures had long ceased to speak to each other: but at least they managed a kind of frozen smile across the gulf. Now the politeness has gone, and they just make faces." The reviewer was not polite in my estimation in dismissing a whole school of disciplined thought, nor correct in saying that philosophers deal with issues that do not matter, but the attitude implied in the reviewer's remarks is one which is often displayed.
