ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the world of fairytales, imagination and fantasy as an environment for learning and experiencing music. Many of the elements of music such as pulse, tempo and dynamics can be explored, and the fantasy world provides a rich environment for improvisation or multimodal transpositions of words into dance. Listening to music leads to movement; the dance is built literally word by word from the story. An interesting feature in this story is ‘music’ living its own life: Snufkin is trying to find his missing five bars, but it is not that simple: he had hit upon five bars which would undoubtedly provide a marvelous beginning for a tune. This alternative view of the music learning environment captures something about the magic of music that is difficult to grasp with words. It allows the learner to search for their own music. The musical and creative journey with a story can be built through many pathways.
