ABSTRACT
The importance of COMESA countries’ agricultural products and food exports to the EU cannot be gainsaid. The EU is the biggest market for these COMESA products. SPS standards, particularly food safety standards, are generally a challenge to developing countries’ trade in these products. 2 On the one hand is the EU, consisting of highly developed and industrialised countries with high food safety standards. On the other hand, you have poor, underdeveloped countries in COMESA with few or non-existent standards striving to export agricultural and food products to the EU.
