ABSTRACT

The posttraumatic growth concept has a relatively short history in psychology but a long history in philosophy. This chapter explores the ways that the conceptual underpinnings of posttraumatic growth appear in various subdisciplines of psychology, often predating the coining of the term itself. A brief review of the history of the concept and the use of other terminology to describe similar post-trauma outcomes is included. An interdisciplinary approach to posttraumatic growth is recommended since reports of posttraumatic growth appear in studies conducted by scholars who have interests in and access to a variety of trauma survivors.
