ABSTRACT

The many reports of posttraumatic growth from studies in differing cultures across the world indicate that it is a universal phenomenon. In this chapter, examples of these cross-cultural reports of PTG are offered. These reports also indicate that individuals can serve as facilitators of cultural change in the aftermath of trauma. The question of how commonplace PTG might be also raises the issue of how to define it using quantitative indicators. The advantages and pitfalls of assigning threshold scores in order to define PTG are considered.
