ABSTRACT

In this chapter we present the most current model of posttraumatic growth. To understand the model, we review the history of its development and the theories drawn on to arrive at the initial conceptualization. The various elements of the model are explained, with the recognition that a linear model cannot visually depict the complexity of PTG as a process; certain elements will be more salient for some people than they are for others. The model therefore depicts the most common course of events or states of mind along the journey and the factors that impact PTG outcomes. We also consider factors outside the model that may impact on growth, such as age or developmental stage, and the type of trauma a person or community has endured.
