ABSTRACT

Qualitative research can provide a rich and compelling account of trauma and its aftermath and the process and outcomes of PTG; it includes semi-structured interviews, open-ended questions providing written narratives, and focus groups. Research using these methods has been conducted around the world, including in the USA, Australia, South Africa, China, Syria, Kosovo, Somalia, and Iraq, as well as with refugees from Sudan, Sierra Leone, and Myanmar. Qualitative methods are essential to develop an understanding of what trauma and PTG mean to people across various cultural groups, rather than assuming what is found in one cultural context can be automatically applied to another, and show there are similarities in PTG across cultures as well as some distinct differences.
