ABSTRACT

Most teachers have experienced the frustration of asking students how they arrived at their answer only to hear, “I just knew it” or “that was the number in my calculator.” Teachers may be further frustrated to realize their students do not know how they solved a word problem even if their answer is correct. More often than not, students simply cannot verbalize their solution process. In order to provide an explanation, a student must possess strong content knowledge, an understanding of the goal of the word problem and why the answer makes sense.
