ABSTRACT

Young people need strong tools for, and methods of, clear and disciplined thinking in order to traverse successfully the worlds of college, career and civic life. The long-term goal is to strengthen the cognitive strategies children will continue to use to become increasingly independent as learners throughout their schooling years and afterwards. The largest percentage of listed standards address the curriculum content needed to become college and career ready while a much smaller but equally important list of standards focuses on the development of the cognitive processes or intellectual power that is at the very core of learning. Teacher language brings all the factors, content, process, meta-cognition, and motivation into play to assist in challenging children to think about what they are learning and contribute to their ability to make connections between subjects and concepts in the process. The chapter also presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in this book.
