ABSTRACT

Location backgrounds bring context to the production. They help establish the scene for the audience. If the director is shooting in a studio and the background is unsatisfactory for any reason, he or she can usually improve it in some way or other. Most of the time, the director will be able to alter the background to achieve the best possible scene. The background is much more than whatever happens to appear behind the subject. It directly affects the success of the program, so it needs to be carefully designed and controlled. Video programs are shot in an extremely wide range of locations: people's homes, offices, factories, rooms, halls, public buildings, studios, out in the streets, and wide-open spaces. When a studio regularly produces a specific program, it may have a permanent set installed, such as a kitchen, a laboratory, an office, a lounge, or a news desk layout, designed to fit the productions.
