ABSTRACT

There is a story of a young man who was setting out upon a medical career. His long and expensive training had been financed largely by a maiden aunt and, being a grateful and dutiful nephew, he often visited her to report on his progress. On one occasion he laid out for her his plans for life - house surgeon, marriage, specialism leading to Consultancy and then early retirement in order to enjoy himself after years of hard work. 'And what then?' inquired his aunt. 'Death, presumably', replied the nephew with a wry chuckle. 'And then?' persisted his aunt. 'How should I know!' exclaimed the young man. 'You may not know', his aunt rejoined, 'but you ought to be thinking about it.'
