I PHILOSOPHERShavetraditionallybeenconcerned,among otherthings,withquestionsabouthumanknowledge.What aretheobjectsofourknowingandbelieving?Whatarethe varioussourcesofourknowledge?Forexample,doesallour knowledgecomefromsensation?Orarethereothersourcesmemory,reason,introspection,intuitionandsoon?Arethere anyreliabledifferencesbetweenknowingsomethingtobethe caseandmerelybelievingittobeso?Andifso,whatarethese differences?Aretherebasicallydifferentkindsofknowledge? Ifso,whatarethedifferentsortsofevidenceappropriateto eachofthesekinds?Wemightbelieve,forexample,(a)that everyangledrawninasemicirclecontainsninetydegreesand (b)thatthemoonisabout24o,ooomilesdistantfromtheearth. Butwhereasevidencederivedfromobservationandmeasurementwouldbeappropriatetoestablishthetruthof(b)it wouldnotbesufficientorevenappropriatetoprovethetruth of(a).lAndarisingfromthis,iftherearedifferentkindsof evidenceappropriatetodifferentkindsofstatement,arethere alsodifferentkindsoftruth?Andifthereare,wha1tare thesedifferentkindsandhowaretheytobeidentifiedand described?
